Pre & Post-Treatment Care

Before Your Treatment

Tell your provider about all medications, supplements, allergies, medical conditions, pregnancy or breastfeeding status, and prior reactions to injectable treatments. Tell us about any neuromuscular disorder, swallowing or breathing difficulty, facial weakness, recent surgery or planned procedure. Notify us of active infection, rash, cold sore, open wound or significant irritation near the treatment area. To reduce avoidable bruising, discuss aspirin, NSAIDs and supplements that may affect bleeding with your medical provider, and do not stop prescribed medication unless the prescriber tells you to.

24–48 hours before: Consider avoiding alcohol and strenuous exercise if these increase your bruising or swelling.

Day of treatment: Arrive with clean skin, eat normally and stay well hydrated.

What to Expect

Small bumps, mild redness, tenderness, headache or bruising may occur and usually improve with time. Results develop gradually, with initial effects in several days and full effect commonly around 2 weeks depending on the product and area. Temporary asymmetry can occur while the treatment takes effect.

After Your Treatment

Remain upright for about 4 hours after treatment unless your provider instructs otherwise. Avoid rubbing, massaging or applying firm pressure to treated areas for the rest of the day. Avoid strenuous exercise, excessive heat, saunas, steam rooms and hot tubs for about 24 hours. Use gentle skincare and avoid aggressive facial treatments or massage over treated areas until cleared by your provider. Makeup may be applied gently once injection sites have closed and there is no active bleeding. Do not expect immediate final results, and allow the product time to take effect before evaluating symmetry or movement.

Follow-Up

A follow-up assessment at about 2 weeks may be recommended, especially for a first treatment or when evaluating dose and symmetry. Contact us before seeking additional neurotoxin elsewhere during the early assessment period.

If you have a history of cold sores or fever blisters, tell your provider before treatment (preventive medication may be appropriate when prescribed). Discuss upcoming dental work, surgery, vaccinations or other procedures so timing can be individualized. To reduce avoidable bruising, discuss aspirin, NSAIDs and supplements that may affect bleeding with your medical provider, and do not stop prescribed medication unless the prescriber tells you to. Avoid excessive sun exposure or arriving with sunburned or irritated skin.

What to Expect

Temporary injection-site swelling, redness, tenderness, bruising, itching, pain or bleeding may occur. Small bumps under the skin can sometimes be felt, and larger lumps have been reported, so contact us with concerns. Initial fullness is partly fluid and swelling and may decrease before gradual collagen-related improvement becomes visible.

After Your Treatment

Follow the 5-5-5 rule, massaging the treated areas for 5 minutes, 5 times a day, for 5 days, unless your provider gives different instructions. Use clean hands and massage all treated areas evenly using the technique demonstrated by your provider. Within the first 24 hours a wrapped cold pack may be applied briefly for comfort, but do not place ice directly on skin. If there are no complications, makeup may generally be applied several hours after treatment per your provider's instructions. Keep injection sites clean and avoid unnecessary touching beyond the instructed massage. Avoid strenuous exercise, excessive heat, saunas, steam rooms and hot tubs for about 24 hours or until initial redness and swelling settle. Avoid excessive sun or UV exposure until redness and swelling resolve, and use broad-spectrum sun protection. Do not schedule aggressive facial treatments over the treated area until cleared by your provider.

Results and Follow-Up

Sculptra works gradually by stimulating collagen, so improvement develops over time rather than immediately. A series of treatments may be recommended, so keep follow-up appointments.

5–7 days before: Stop retinol/retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, scrubs, exfoliating brushes and other irritating products unless your provider directs otherwise. Avoid waxing, depilatory creams, aggressive facial treatments, tanning beds and excessive sun exposure. Notify us of sunburn, rash, cold sore, active skin infection, open wound or significant irritation in the treatment area. Tell your provider about medications, supplements, allergies, recent procedures and health changes, and do not stop prescribed medication unless directed by the prescriber.

24–48 hours before: Avoid activities or products that irritate the skin and hydrate well. If you have a history of cold sores or fever blisters, notify your provider before treatment.

Day of treatment: Arrive with clean skin when possible, with no makeup, self-tanner, oils or heavy skincare on the treatment area.

What to Expect

Temporary redness, warmth, mild swelling, tenderness, tightness, itching, dryness, flaking, peeling or a rough texture may occur. These are generally temporary and should gradually improve as the skin heals.

First 24 Hours

Touch the treated area as little as possible and wash hands before touching your skin. Use only post-treatment products recommended by Refined By Robin Aesthetics. Do not apply makeup for the first 24 hours. Avoid strenuous exercise, sweating, saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs, swimming and direct sun exposure. Use a clean pillowcase and clean towels.

Days 2–3

Cleanse gently with a mild, non-exfoliating cleanser and use gentle hydration as directed. Avoid direct sun exposure and continue avoiding strenuous or sweaty exercise, saunas, steam rooms and hot tubs for a full 72 hours after treatment. Do not pick, peel, scratch, scrub or exfoliate treated skin.

Days 4–7

Dryness, tightness, rough texture or mild flaking can occur; continue gentle skincare. Until skin is calm and healed, avoid retinol/retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, exfoliating scrubs or brushes, benzoyl peroxide, irritating vitamin C products and at-home peels. Resume active skincare only when skin has returned to baseline or as directed by your provider.

Sun Protection

Minimize direct sun exposure during healing and wear a wide-brimmed hat outdoors. Once appropriate after treatment, use broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher as directed by your provider. Continue daily sun protection to help protect your skin and treatment results.

✦ Neurotoxins (Botox®, Dysport®, Daxxify®)

Most patients describe the sensation as a tiny quick pinch — nothing more. The needles used are very fine, and the treatment typically takes only 15–30 minutes with little to no downtime. Many patients are surprised at how easy it is. Robin uses expert injection technique to maximize both comfort and results.

Results vary based on the product, treatment area, and your individual metabolism. Generally: Botox® and Dysport® last about 3–4 months, Xeomin® is similar, and Daxxify® may last up to 6 months or longer for some patients. First-time patients sometimes metabolize the product faster. Consistent treatments over time can lead to longer-lasting results.

You'll typically start noticing results within 3–7 days, but full results aren't visible until about 14 days post-treatment. That's why Robin schedules a complimentary 2-week follow-up — to assess your outcome, address any asymmetry, and ensure you're happy with your results.

Not with Robin. Her entire philosophy is built around natural-looking results. The "frozen face" look comes from using too much product in the wrong places. Robin uses a conservative, individualized approach — the goal is always to look refreshed, rested, and like yourself, never overdone or expressionless. If anything, the most common feedback Robin hears is: "You can't even tell I had anything done — I just look really rested."

All three are FDA-approved neurotoxins that work the same way — they temporarily relax facial muscles to soften wrinkles. The main differences: Dysport® tends to spread slightly more and may have a faster onset (2–3 days vs. 3–7 for Botox®). Daxxify® is the newer option and is formulated with a peptide that may extend results up to 6 months or longer for some patients. Robin will discuss which product is right for your goals and anatomy at your consultation.

◈ Dermal Fillers

Most dermal fillers already contain lidocaine (a numbing agent) built into the formula, which makes the experience progressively more comfortable as the treatment continues. For more sensitive areas like lips, a topical numbing cream is applied beforehand. Most patients find the discomfort very manageable — the procedure is over quickly and well worth the results.

It depends on the area and the specific product. Lip filler typically lasts 6–12 months. Cheek and midface filler can last 12–18 months. Jawline and chin filler often lasts 12–24 months. Sculptra®, a collagen stimulator (not a traditional filler), can last 2+ years. Your individual metabolism, lifestyle, and how much product is used all affect longevity.

Yes — swelling and bruising are completely normal and expected, especially with lip filler. Swelling is usually most noticeable in the first 24–72 hours and resolves over about a week. Bruising can happen and may take 1–2 weeks to fully resolve. This is normal and temporary. Results fully settle once swelling resolves, typically 2–4 weeks post-treatment.

◇ General & Safety

Patients must be 18 years or older to receive any treatment at Refined By Robin Aesthetics. Neurotoxin and filler treatments are elective cosmetic procedures and are reserved for adults. Robin will review your health history during your consultation to ensure you're an appropriate candidate.

Absolutely — and it's very common! Many patients receive both neurotoxin and filler treatments in the same appointment. Combining Botox/Dysport for dynamic wrinkles with filler for volume loss gives a more comprehensive, natural-looking result. Robin will build a customized treatment plan at your consultation based on your goals and what makes the most sense for you.

No. Neurotoxins, dermal fillers, and chemical peels are not recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. The safety of these treatments has not been established in pregnant or nursing patients. Robin will ask about pregnancy status at your consultation and will not perform elective aesthetic procedures during this time. Your health and safety always come first.

When performed by a qualified, licensed provider using FDA-approved products, these treatments are considered very safe. Robin is a registered nurse with advanced aesthetic training and performs all treatments under the supervision of a licensed physician Medical Director, in compliance with Kentucky state regulations. As with any medical procedure, there are potential risks including bruising, swelling, asymmetry, and rare complications. Robin will review all risks during your consultation and obtain your informed consent before any treatment.

For neurotoxins: avoid alcohol, aspirin, and blood-thinning supplements (fish oil, vitamin E, ibuprofen) for 7 days before treatment if possible. Arrive with a clean face. For fillers: the same applies, plus stay well hydrated. All patients should disclose their full medical history, medications, and supplements. If in doubt, your patient intake forms and pre-treatment instructions sheet will walk you through everything clearly.
